When we eat sugar (refined carbohydrate) bacteria in the mouth metabolise this sugar and acid is produced.
Over time the resulting acid softens the tooth enamel and dentine creating decay.
This decay creates a hole in the tooth which needs to be fixed or restored to prevent pain and tooth loss.
More and more people are not opting to have a tooth coloured filling (called a composite) placed instead of the traditional silver amalgam fillings of yesteryear. Not only are they cosmetically superior but they are mercury- free creating less impact on the environment.
Tooth coloured fillings are available in a wide range of shades (included tooth whitened shades) to produce as close a match as possible to the natural tooth.
